Potential Hazards
Potential Hazards – Fire
- The product contains a highly flammable solvent with a flash point of 6 Degrees Celsius.
- This is the temperature at which the solvent component gives off sufficient vapor to form an ignitable mixture with the air at or near the surface of the wet paint.
- Ignition of the vapor may occur as a result of contact with sources of ignition such as cigarettes, lighters, naked flames, static discharges and unprotected non-flameproof electrical equipment.
- The former three are considered to be potentially dangerous ignition sources.
- The hazard is minimized if these are absent from the work place and that the ventilation is good.

Storage and Safety Precautions
The Rilbex Marking tubes are safe to use provided that good storage, handling and application procedures are followed.
- Replace the plastic cap back over the nozzle after use.
- Store in a cool dry place.
- Do not puncture the tube.
- The marking paint contains an inflammable solvent.
It is therefore important to ensure that spillages are reduced to a minimum by careful handling of the tubes, and that adequate ventilation is maintained. The design of the tubes is such that the surface area of wet marking paint exposed during application is minimal, and this reduces the risk of solvent inhalation. - Avoid Skin and Eye Contact
- Do Not swallow
- Keep out of reach of children
Fire
Eliminate all sources of ignition from the work and storage areas.
This includes prohibiting smoking and naked flames. Any fires must be treated as petrol fires and suitable extinguishers must be used.
Spillage
The wet paint must not be wasted into drains or watercourses. Contain any spills using sand or earth, collect (using shovel) and place in a seal able metal container. Seal the container and arrange for safe disposal (using a reputable waste disposal company). Keep all sources of ignition away.
Storage
The storage requirements depend on the number of tubes which are kept. But in general, if a large number are stored, the following points apply:
- The storage site should be approved by the local authority
- Storage buildings should be constructed from non-flammable materials, e.g. concrete or bricks
- Fire extinguishers of a suitable type should be provided
- The storage temperature should be kept below 50 deg Celsius

Health and Safety
The Rilbex Marking pens are safe to use provided that good storage, handling and application procedures are followed.
The design of the pens is such that only a very small quantity of wet paint is exposed at any time and subsequently they are considered to be safer to use than conventional paints.
However, abuse of the tubes may result in rupture and spillage.
It is recommended that the following procedures should be adhered to as routine in order to minimize fire and health hazards. All personnel using the product should be properly informed and instructed concerning its potential hazards.

Health Risks
The principal Health Risk of the product is the solvent content. Most organic solvents may have hazardous effects as described below.
Inhalation of Vapors
The inhalation of high concentrations of organic solvent vapors during the application of conventional paints my result in irritant and anesthetic effects. In severe cases, unconsciousness may result.
It is therefore important to ensure that spillages are reduced to a minimum by careful handling of the tubes, and that adequate ventilation is maintained.
The design of the tubes is such that the surface area of wet paint exposed during application is minimal, and this reduces the risk of solvent inhalation.
Skin and Eye Contact
Skin and eye contact with the marking paint may result in irritation. Repeated contact may cause dermatitis.
Swallowing
If the wet paint is swallowed, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain may result. The dry paint does not contain toxic ingredients and is considered to be non-toxic. However, it should not be chewed or swallowed in case toxic contaminants are ingested.
